An Immersive Design Lab (IDL) is a facility that enables collaborative research and teaching in the fields of interactive extended reality (XR) and machine learning (ML) applied to design, architecture and engineering. An IDL typically consists of a large circular or elliptical arena that can accommodate up to 20 people, surrounded by an array of speakers, sensors, projectors and other devices that create immersive spatial audio and visual experiences. An IDL allows users to explore complex data and simulations, communicate and co-create with remote collaborators, interact with computational models and robots, and engage in human-in-the-loop scenarios. An IDL can also serve as a platform for developing creative and immersive technology skills, as well as fostering innovation and community engagement.
